Process Review

Chrissy writes, "..I suggest that the current Pages write down things that we would like covered during training (things that take a while to pick up, or things that may seem confusing, or things that have been missed during training in the past)".

I agree with Chrissy's suggestion; we should review these procedures from time to time, especially with Page input. Let's start with the opening/closing process--Is there anything in this list you would like to add, delete, revise?
Opening/Closing Checklist

I don't think anything needs to be added to the opening/closing duties, but new pages actually need to be explicitly taught how to do everything. The supervisors should show them where the self checkout barcode is, how to do a cart count, how to calculate stats, etc. instead of leaving it up to other pages. All of this may seem easy and obvious to us now because we've been doing it so long, but new pages often seem baffled by everything.

I completely agree. When I first started the hard part was not what to do during opening/closing, but how to do each task.

Based on my first closing experience, even after I read through the guidelines, there were two problems occurred to me during the closing procedure. Should the printers be turned off ? , how do I turn off the game computers? I agree it is much easier if someone there to show you, but it would not do any harm to put those answer into writing.

This is good to know the next time we have new pages.

For Closing:

(this is a lot less condensed)

1. Start closing at least 30 minutes before the library closes; start earlier if necessary.
- If you have not finished your cart, DO NOT take more than 10 minutes to finish, especially if there is only 1 other page who is closing.
- Take your unfinished cart back, and make a NEW SLIP for it for the next Page.

2. Pick up all books: on the tables, on the chairs, on the floor AND books that are stacked on the shelves. Check for horizontally placed books inside the shelves.
- Put CHILDRENS books on the dump cart across from the gaming computers.
- Put ADULT books on an empty cart, if there are too many to put away.
***FRONT SHELVES THAT HAVE BOOKS THAT ARE PUSHED BACK!***

3. Push in ALL chairs; this includes the small meeting rooms across from the Adult Information desk.

4. Go to the MAGAZINES area and pick up/put magazines back where they belong, unless there are too many to put away--then those go on the magazine cart in Circ.

5. Pick up stray paper/trash (not snot rags!).

6. 10 to 5 minutes before closing, turn off all monitors that are not being used by patrons.

7. 5 minutes before closing, turn off gaming computers in YS and self-checkout stations and copiers.
- Turning off gaming computers:
a. Password: ashys
b. Click EXIT
c. Click SHUTDOWN
- Turning off self-checkout: the barcode is in a drawer behind the checkout desk; scan the barcode that says "shutdown."

8. Do cart count
- Count the # of carts
- Look for the OLDEST cart (i.e. 6/3 @ 2:30 PM)
- Write down what each cart is (i.e. 3 J, 2 E, 1 A, 4 AV, 1 D)
- D is for "dump"
- AV is for the DVD cart
- Write all of this info on the calendar in the Page area.
